General Motors Unveils Sodium-Ion Battery and Grid Innovation Strategy

General Motors has announced a series of strategic energy business initiatives at an event in San Francisco this week. These include developing sodium-ion batteries for grid energy storage, scaling up vehicle-to-grid technology applications, and expanding battery second-life businesses.

In the grid energy storage sector, General Motors announced a partnership with energy storage system manufacturer Peak Energy to develop sodium-ion batteries specifically designed for stationary storage. This battery will be developed at GM's battery research and development center in Warren, Michigan, with prototype production planned for this year at the Wallace Battery Innovation Center. Sodium-ion batteries can operate over a wider temperature range and may not require active liquid cooling systems, thereby reducing system complexity and maintenance costs. Kurt Kelty, Vice President of Battery and Sustainability at General Motors, stated that sodium-ion is the right solution for utility-scale stationary storage.

Concurrently, General Motors is advancing lithium iron phosphate battery production through its joint venture with LG Energy Solution, with production expected to commence soon for commercial energy storage applications. As a short-term solution, GM has already deployed approximately 10,000 used electric vehicle battery packs into energy infrastructure through a partnership with Redwood Materials, including powering Crusoe's artificial intelligence data center in Nevada.

Regarding vehicle-to-grid technology, General Motors has made bidirectional charging capability a standard feature across its entire vehicle lineup. There are already over 250,000 GM vehicles on U.S. roads with this capability. The company is inviting utility companies nationwide to collaborate, working with Pacific Gas and Electric Company in California, where an estimated 130,000 GM electric vehicles are expected to participate in grid balancing services by 2030. In Michigan, GM is conducting real-world environment testing with DTE Energy.

General Motors will also deploy a 1.5-megawatt second-life battery energy storage system at one of its own plants in Michigan. Composed of approximately 100 recycled battery packs, the system is projected to save the factory over $3 million in electricity costs during its operational lifespan.

Sterling Anderson, Chief Product Officer at General Motors, expressed that the company envisions a future where electric vehicles, the batteries that power them, and the national grid work in harmony. He stated the aim is to alleviate pressure on the power system from artificial intelligence data centers and renewable energy integration through the integration of battery and grid technologies.
