Intel and Amazon AWS announced their wafer foundry cooperation on the Intel 18A node on September 16th last year, while also mentioning that Intel would supply custom Intel 3 process Xeon 6 processors to AWS. On August 19th local time, Amazon AWS announced the launch of eighth-generation memory-optimized EC2 instances R8i and R8i-flex, both based on custom Intel Xeon 6 processors available exclusively on AWS, offering the highest performance and fastest memory bandwidth.
Amazon AWS stated that the Intel Xeon 6 processors used in R8i and R8i-flex instances feature a sustained all-core turbo frequency of 3.9 GHz and support for 7200MT/s DDR5 memory. The R8i instances can scale up to 384 vCPUs. Considering factors such as one vCPU in cloud service instances corresponding to one thread in physical processors, cloud services typically being based on dual-socket platforms, and this series being memory-optimized instances, R8i and R8i-flex should be based on dual-socket 96-core Intel Xeon 6900P performance core "Granite Rapids-AP" processors.
The 96-core "Granite Rapids-AP" processors listed on Intel's official website (Xeon 6972P and 6952P) have a maximum all-core turbo frequency of only 3.5 GHz, with standard memory support of 6400MT/s RDIMM or 8800MT/s MRDIMM. The custom model used by Amazon AWS should feature higher all-core turbo and memory frequency support.
