Wu Lei, Party Secretary and Chairman of Shanghai Electric Group, recently led a delegation to the town of Mendi in Wiltshire, UK, for an on-site review of the Mendi Phase II Shiling Energy Storage Project, which is being delivered under a general contracting arrangement by Shanghai Electric Power Station Engineering Company. During the visit, the team checked in on the project staff stationed in the UK and held discussions with representatives from the owner, China Huaneng, focusing on project progress and avenues for deeper collaboration.
The Mendi Phase II initiative stands as Shanghai Electric's debut European EPC energy storage venture and is also China Huaneng's sole international construction project this year. With a total installed capacity of 49.9 megawatts and a storage capacity of 149.7 megawatt-hours, the project is slated to achieve grid connection readiness by the end of this year. Once operational, it will work in tandem with the already-running Mendi Phase I, collectively supporting UK grid peak shaving, rapid frequency response, and ancillary services, thereby bolstering the safe and stable operation of the British power network and the integration of renewable energy sources.
During the inspection, Wu Lei toured the construction site, gaining insights into project timelines, quality control measures, and safety protocols. He extended heartfelt gratitude to the overseas team for their dedication far from home, stressing that safety and quality are the lifeblood of the project and must remain top priorities to drive progress forward. He also encouraged team members to strike a healthy work-life balance, assuring them that the group will provide comprehensive logistical support to make them feel at home even while abroad.
In talks with China Huaneng, both sides reached a consensus on pivotal issues such as the year-end grid connection target and equipment supply assurance. They agreed to intensify pragmatic collaboration in new energy and storage sectors, leveraging Shanghai Electric's technical prowess in equipment manufacturing and engineering construction alongside China Huaneng's operational and resource integration expertise. This synergy of "equipment plus engineering plus operations" is poised to become a core competitive edge in expanding into international markets, as both parties commit to tackling overseas challenges together and exploring opportunities across the UK and beyond.
