China Yuchai International Limited (CYD) announced on May, 14 2026 that its main operating subsidiary, Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Company Limited, has developed the company’s first high-pressure, direct-injection internal combustion engine capable of running entirely on ammonia for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

The new power unit combines a high-pressure ammonia-to-hydrogen generation system with direct injection of liquid ammonia ignited through a pre-chamber jet. Yuchai states that the engine’s thermal efficiency is comparable to the top tier of current heavy-duty diesel engines, providing a zero-carbon solution for long-haul transport.

President Weng Ming Hoh said the breakthrough broadens Yuchai’s portfolio of low- and zero-carbon technologies, which already includes hydrogen- and methanol-based propulsion systems, and supports China’s “Dual Carbon” policy objectives.

Yuchai, founded in 1951, sold 461,309 engines in 2025 and supplies powertrains for trucks, buses, construction and agricultural machinery, marine vessels and power generation equipment through an extensive network of sales and service centers in China and overseas.
