每天，全球约20%的石油日供应量通过数十艘摩天大楼规模的油轮挤过这个狭窄通道。除了原油运输，全球液化天然气的巨大份额同样依赖这条航线。这使得这个单一过境点成为维持工厂运转和家庭供暖所需燃料输送的关键命脉。
"这是迄今为止世界上最重要的海上咽喉要道，"地缘经济研究专家爱德华·菲什曼指出，"如果霍尔木兹海峡被长期关闭或持续受阻，将导致全球油价出现非常大幅度的暴涨。"
经霍尔木兹海峡运输的原油和液化天然气中，超过80%流向亚洲市场，主要目的地为中国、印度和日本。
鉴于其战略价值，这片水域经常成为国际冲突的焦点。伊朗曾多次在该区域骚扰外国籍油轮，并在局势紧张时威胁中断贸易。然而德黑兰方面从未完全封锁海峡，因为任何航运中断同样会扼杀伊朗的能源出口——这正是其经济的生命线。
沙特阿拉伯和阿拉伯联合酋长国虽拥有可绕开霍尔木兹海峡的输油管道，这些设施能在航道受阻时缓解运输压力，但若遭遇全面封锁，其替代能力仍不足以弥补缺口。
