US Closing Bell | Chip Selloff Sends Nasdaq Sliding 2.1%

US Closing Bell
Yesterday

October 17, U.S. stocks closed lower as a steep sell-off in semiconductor names pulled the market into the red. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.34%, the S&P 500 fell 1.09%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite tumbled 2.14%, its worst day in nearly two months. Hotter-than-expected September retail-sales figures stoked concerns that the Federal Reserve may keep rates elevated, sending Treasury yields higher and pressuring growth-oriented technology shares, while defensive stocks proved more resilient.

Semiconductor weakness dominated trading, with data-center operator VNET Group falling 10.91%, Applied Optoelectronics sinking 9.75%, Palantir Technologies down 7.22%, Advanced Micro Devices off 5.95%, Intel lower by 5.79%, Micron Technology retreating 5.63%, and Tesla easing 2.13% as risk appetite faded. In contrast, the Direxion Daily Semiconductors Bear 3x ETF (SOXS) jumped 12.81% as traders hedged against further chip-sector losses.

Elsewhere, select U.S.-listed Chinese and niche plays bucked the gloom. Origin Agritech surged 32.54%, Huize Holding climbed 20.98%, MMTec rallied 13.88%, Aurora Mobile added 11.39%, and bamboo-product maker Tantech advanced 6.07%, highlighting investors’ appetite for idiosyncratic growth stories despite the broader sell-off.
