Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has unveiled a comprehensive €2.2 billion package of economic measures, in a bold bid to tackle the escalating cost-of-living crisis while the nation gears up for next year's general election.

"If we have been on the right track across all sectors so far, now it is time to significantly accelerate our pace," Mitsotakis declared on Saturday during his annual keynote address in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, outlining the government's priorities for the coming months. He underscored that the progress reflected in macroeconomic data must translate directly into tangible improvements in citizens' everyday lives, emphasizing that economic growth should be felt in the household budgets of every ordinary person.

Greece is striving to improve the economic standing of its citizens, who continue to grapple with soaring prices and the lingering financial strain of a decade-long debt crisis, all against a backdrop of heightened political sensitivity. Mitsotakis, now serving his second term as Prime Minister, confirmed that the next national election will be held within months, with opinion polls consistently showing that the high cost of living remains the electorate's foremost concern.

The newly announced policies are designed with a sharp focus on supporting self-employed professionals, retirees, farmers, and families with multiple children. As part of the plan, the national minimum wage will be raised from its current €920 to €1,000 by January 2028. Additional measures include an annual €500 Christmas bonus for public sector employees, a 0.5 percentage point reduction in social security contributions for private sector workers, and a full income tax exemption on the first €20,000 of annual earnings for families with three children.
