Tabcorp Holdings Ltd's stock plummeted 14.20% during Friday's intraday trading session, marking a significant decline for the Australian wagering and gaming operator.

The sharp drop follows news that Australia's financial crimes watchdog, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC), has launched an investigation into Tabcorp's compliance with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing obligations. The regulator cited serious concerns about the company's ability to identify, mitigate and manage associated risks effectively.

In response to the regulatory scrutiny, Jefferies downgraded Tabcorp from "buy" to "hold," noting that such investigations in the gaming sector have historically been prolonged, costly, and disruptive to operations. Analysts warned the probe would likely remain an overhang on the stock, with potential impacts extending beyond punitive fines to operating earnings. While Fitch Ratings indicated Tabcorp's credit rating isn't immediately at risk, and Jarden suggested the sell-off might be excessive, the market reaction reflects heightened concerns about potential remediation costs and increased regulatory scrutiny across Australia's gaming sector.
