ByteDance's AI-driven office business is undergoing a fresh round of restructuring.
On August 24, ByteDance completed a team integration for its office AI products, with the TRAE and Coze teams being fully merged into the Doubao ecosystem. Following this adjustment, TRAE Work and Coze will be combined with Doubao to enhance product capabilities in work scenarios. TRAE IDE and CLI will continue to develop as a programming product line, now under the Doubao brand. The relevant product and operations teams will all report directly to Zhao Qi, the head of Doubao products.
ByteDance also stated that this adjustment further clarifies Doubao's core AI business positioning, as the company plans to concentrate its AI office product focus on Doubao. Doubao is expected to launch a standalone AI office product called "Doubao Work" as early as this week, serving as the unified product and brand for ByteDance's AI office scenarios.
In response to this restructuring, ByteDance said the integration aims to better synergize product and technical resources, providing users with a superior AI work experience, and that existing user benefits will remain unaffected. As of the time of writing, the official launch date, full feature set, and pricing scheme for "Doubao Work" have yet to be disclosed.
Looking at the multiple adjustments over the past year, the merger of TRAE and Coze is not an isolated team change but a continuation of ByteDance's strategy to establish Doubao as the mainline and consolidate its AI productivity tools.
In September 2025, Zhao Qi began overseeing Doubao products, managing mobile, PC, and model strategy offerings. At that time, to strengthen collaboration between Doubao and the Feishu office suite, product leads at Feishu added a dotted-line reporting relationship to Zhao Qi. The connection between Doubao and ByteDance's existing office business was first established within the management framework.
On July 30 of this year, this collaboration was further escalated. ByteDance merged the Feishu product team with the Doubao product team to form a new Doubao product team, led by Zhao Qi, with Feishu head Xie Xin reporting to him.
Simultaneously, Feishu's marketing, sales, and customer service teams were consolidated with the Volcano Engine related teams, creating a unified go-to-market (GTM) organization for the enterprise market, responsible for the commercialization of ByteDance's MaaS and SaaS businesses.
This adjustment effectively created two relatively clear pathways: on the product side, Doubao serves as the center integrating AI assistants and office scenarios, while on the commercialization side, Volcano Engine uniformly handles enterprise clients.
Feishu's existing products and services will be retained, with its documents, meetings, knowledge base, organizational relationships, and permission systems providing a foundation for AI to enter enterprise workflows.
On August 6, ByteDance CEO Liang Rubo further elaborated on the business principles of "high priority, thick trunk, and optimized long-term" at the mid-year all-hands meeting, expressing hope that Doubao would become a "trunk" business capable of driving other operations in the future. Under this approach, Doubao's role is no longer limited to a general-purpose AI assistant for individual users but is beginning to serve as a product entry point connecting models, office tools, collaboration, and development platforms.
The inclusion of TRAE and Coze into the Doubao system brings two key capabilities.
TRAE was initially positioned as an AI programming tool aimed at developers, with product forms including IDE and CLI.
The subsequent launch of TRAE Work expanded its usage to non-programming tasks such as document processing, research, data analysis, presentation creation, and application generation. This adjustment retains TRAE IDE and CLI as independent product lines, indicating that ByteDance has not abandoned TRAE's positioning among professional developers but is further distinguishing general office capabilities from professional programming capabilities.
Coze early on provided agent-building, plugin integration, and workflow orchestration capabilities, gradually expanding to multi-agent collaboration and complex task execution. Compared to Doubao, which primarily targets end users, Coze's value lies more in agent creation, tool connection, and workflow configuration.
After being merged into Doubao, these capabilities are likely to become components of "Doubao Work" for delivering customized services to individuals and enterprises.
Prior to this, despite having different entry points, the product boundaries of Doubao, TRAE Work, and Coze in work scenarios had been gradually converging.
The Doubao desktop version began adding features such as office tasks, tool invocation, and computer operations; TRAE Work extended from programming to general office use; and Coze moved from an agent development platform into task collaboration. Running multiple products in parallel facilitated early exploration, but as functional overlap increased, it also generated issues of duplicate R&D, brand dispersion, and higher user choice costs.
The launch of "Doubao Work" is primarily aimed at solving the unified entry point problem.
Based on currently disclosed information, ByteDance may establish a layered structure: Doubao and "Doubao Work" serve as the general AI and office entry; TRAE IDE and CLI continue to serve professional programming; Coze provides agent, skill, and workflow capabilities; Feishu connects internal documents, communication, organizational relationships, and permissions; and Volcano Engine handles underlying models, cloud services, and enterprise commercialization.
From this perspective, the current adjustment can be understood as an expansion of Doubao's business boundaries, but it cannot simply be equated with an upgrade of product capabilities. Organizational integration can reduce internal coordination costs, but what truly impacts user experience is whether accounts, files, data, permissions, tools, and payment systems across different products can be interconnected.
External competition is pushing major tech companies to reduce internal product overlap.
Alibaba has integrated AI office products such as QoderWork, Wukong, and MuleRun into Qianwen Office, while Tencent continues to advance WorkBuddy. The competitive focus in AI office products is shifting from model Q&A to long-task execution, local and cloud file processing, third-party tool connections, and enterprise data invocation.
From Zhao Qi's earlier takeover of Doubao products, to the integration of the Feishu product team, and now to TRAE and Coze joining the Doubao ecosystem, ByteDance's adjustment path has become fairly clear: Doubao is positioned as the AI trunk business, with previously scattered productivity capabilities gradually reorganizing around this mainline.
However, whether a "super entry point" can truly materialize ultimately depends on the product rather than organizational structure. The upcoming "Doubao Work" will serve as the first significant test of this integration.
