Cosco Shipping International (Cosco), through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Cogent Jurong Island, broke ground today for its Jurong Island Logistics Hub Phase 2 (JILH).

First announced on Nov 29, the strategic initiative aims to address the growing demand for specialised logistics services serving the petrochemical and chemical sectors in Jurong Island,

The facility will be built on Tembusu Crescent on the island, with the 25,00 sqm (269,097.76 sq ft) plot of land leased for 30 years by JTC Corporation.

JILH Phase 2 will integrate with JILH Phase 1 through shared infrastructure, including a ground-to-roof ramp, creating a mega logistics hub.

The combined expanded facility, spanning approximately 650,000 sq ft of warehouse space, will offer comprehensive logistic services such as the handling of dangerous goods (DG) and general cargo services, as well as the repackaging of materials from tank containers into drums or intermediate bulk containers (IBCs).

The facility will also have empty container depot services, tank container cleaning services and a 24-hour transportation service catered for both DG and non-DG cargo.

Meanwhile, JILH Phase 2 will also come equipped with a double-volume warehouse for higher stacking and automation technologies such as automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to optimise operations and improve cost efficiency.

On the end of sustainability, due to the close proximity of the facility to Jurong Island Terminal (JIT) and the deployment of barging containers instead of traditional road transport, Cosco says that JILH Phase 2 will significantly reduce transport time, cost, and ultimately, emissions.

“Today’s groundbreaking ceremony reflects Cogent’s commitment to innovation and sustainability," says Lan Chun Hai, Cosco executive vice president at the ceremony.

"JILH Phase 2 will set a new benchmark in logistics capabilities and environmental stewardship, supporting our customers’ needs while contributing to Singapore’s green transformation,” he adds.

Christine Wong, assistant CEO, Cluster Group, JTC, adds, “We welcome Cogent’s expansion of its Jurong Island Logistics Hub, which will enhance the logistics ecosystem in Jurong Island by encouraging a more sustainable and efficient mode of cargo transportation.

"This will support our collective efforts to transform Jurong Island into a sustainable energy and chemicals park," she adds.

Shares in Cosco closed 0.1 cent higher or 0.75% up at 13.5 cents on Dec 17.
