Uber Technologies (UBER) and Lyft (LYFT) ride-hailing trips will cost an additional $1.50 per trip into, out of, and within New York's newly launched congestion charge zone, multiple media outlets reported Sunday.

The congestion charge zone stretching from the bottom of Central Park to the southern tip of Manhattan became "fully operational" Sunday, Financial Times reported, citing New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The congestion charge will be passed on to passengers instead of the Uber or Lyft drivers, The New York Times said.

The scheme aims to reduce traffic by about 10% and raise $15 billion that can be invested in public transit projects, according to the reports.
