SSR Mining's (ASX:SSR) said that mining consulting firm Call & Nicholas confirmed that a third-party engineering design flaw likely caused the heap leach failure at its Copler mine in Turkey, last February, according to a Thursday filing with the Australian bourse.
Call & Nicholas's independent review found that overestimated shear strength properties in the liner system led to insufficient safety factors, causing the failure, the filing said.
The review also confirmed that construction and operation were in line with the approved design, with no evidence that excess water, blasting vibrations, or over-stacking contributed, the filing added.
The company said that the timeline for resuming operations at Copler remains uncertain.
