Rio Tinto Group (ASX:RIO) said Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), its minerals sands joint venture in South Africa, signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Red Rocket Energy for the construction of the Overberg Wind Farm project in the Western Cape, according to a Thursday statement by the company.
Construction at the project is slated to start in the first half of 2025, with the first energy flow expected in December 2026, the company said. RBM has been allocated 230 megawatts (MW) of the project's total export capacity.
This project will contribute to RBM's goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by about 30%, per the statement.
Through the PPA, RBM has now secured about 500 MW of renewable energy capacity, Rio Tinto said.
In addition to the Overberg Wind Farm, RBM is advancing the Bolobedu Solar PV and Khangela Emoyeni Wind Farm projects, which together are expected to cut RBM's Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 60% from the 2018 baseline.
