HOUSTON, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Firefighters brought a blaze at PBF Energy's PBF.N 156,400 barrel-per-day (bpd) Martinez California refinery under control early on Sunday morning, according to a statement posted online by PBF.

The fire broke out on Saturday afternoon, according to statements from PBF and government agencies in the north San Francisco Bay city of Martinez.

Residents in Martinez, located 23 miles (37 km) northeast of San Francisco, were ordered by Contra Costa County officials to shelter inside their homes for part of Saturday afternoon and evening because of the smoke from the fire.

Six people were treated medically and released for injuries sustained in the fire.

PBF said in a statement smoke would be visible from the fire and the refinery's safety flare system until the blaze is extinguished.
