Labor could buy the collapsed airline Regional Express if a new private owner does not emerge by the middle of the year, opening the door to taxpayers having to spend hundreds of millions to replace its 40-year-old planes.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Labor would push for a successful private sale but flagged it would work on “contingency plans with relevant state governments, including for potential Commonwealth acquisition”.
