未来几年随着世界各地的人们使用更多的电力来运行空调、工业和越来越多的数据中心，电力需求势将急剧增加。

　　据国际能源署（IEA）的一份报告，未来三年全球用电量势将增加3，500万亿瓦时的空前水平。每年增加的电量超过了日本一年的用电量。

　　这段时期内约4%的年增长率是多年来最快的速度，凸显出电力在全球整体能源需求中的重要性与日俱增。

　　“全球电力需求加速增长，凸显了全球能源系统正在发生的重大变化，以及新的电力时代的到来。”国际能源署能源市场与安全主管Keisuke Sadamori在一份声明中表示，“但它也给政府确保安全、负担得起和可持续的电力供应带来了不断变化的挑战。”

　　近年来发展中国家推动了电力需求的增长，而发达经济体的电力消费则因效率提高而停滞不前甚至下降。但国际能源署发现，现在美国、欧盟和日本的需求都将出现增长。仅美国未来三年的电力需求增长就将相当于人口最多的加利福尼亚州一年的用电量。

　　国际能源署指出，所有这些新需求都将通过可再生能源和核电站创纪录的发电量来满足。尽管绿色能源发电量飙升，但可能不足以显著减少排放。从现在到2027年电力行业的全球碳排放量势将每年仅下降0.1%，在此期间煤电大致持平，天然气发电量将增长0.6%。
