PGI Backs Danantara's Formation, Urges Transparent Oversight as Prabowo Wants Religious Organizations' Involved

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gomar Gultom, chairman of the Advisory Council of the Communion of Churches in Indonesia (PGI), welcomes the establishment of the Daya Anagata Nusantara (Danantara) Investment Management Agency, calling it a breakthrough in improving the effectiveness and efficiency of managing state assets.

Gultom believes that Danantara can serve as a solution for coordinating various state-owned enterprise (SOE) projects, fostering more integrated and structured collaboration.

"The formation of Danantara is a significant step forward. With more coordinated management, scattered SOE projects can be executed in a unified and efficient manner," Gultom said on Tuesday, February 18.

However, he stressed that given the vast scale of assets under Danantara’s management, strict and independent oversight is essential. "Assets of this magnitude require transparent and impartial supervision. Those entrusted with oversight must be free from personal, political, or short-term interests," he stated.

Gultom emphasized that independent monitoring, free from political or sectarian influence, is crucial to ensuring Danantara fulfills its purpose. He added that this approach would allow the country to maximize its potential while upholding principles of social justice.

Gultom’s statement aligns with the views of Muhammadiyah Chairman Anwar Abbas, who also highlighted the importance of religious organizations' involvement in Danantara’s supervision. "Including religious organizations in Danantara’s oversight is a positive move," he said.

He expressed hope that the participation of faith-based organizations would help uphold the values of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution while preventing the nation’s economic management from being influenced by unchecked capitalism, which could exacerbate socio-economic inequality.

"We want Indonesia to progress, but not by mimicking Western or Chinese models. We must move forward with our own identity as a religious and cultural nation," he asserted.

Prabowo Seeks Broad Oversight of Danantara

Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto invited all former Presidents of Indonesia—including the 5th President Megawati Soekarnoputri, the 6th President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), and the 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi)—to take part in overseeing Danantara.

"Danantara represents the energy of the future, and we must safeguard it together. That is why I am asking all former Presidents to help oversee this fund," Prabowo stated during his speech at the 17th anniversary of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) in Sentul, West Java, on Saturday, February 15, as quoted by Antara.

The President also urged major religious organizations, including Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Muhammadiyah, and the Indonesian Bishops' Conference (KWI), to participate in overseeing the management of state wealth within Danantara.
