Should You Be Adding IDACORP (NYSE:IDA) To Your Watchlist Today?

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like IDACORP (NYSE:IDA). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide IDACORP with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

How Fast Is IDACORP Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So it's easy to see why many investors focus in on EPS growth. Over the last year, IDACORP increased its EPS from US$5.15 to US$5.43. That's a modest gain of 5.4%.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. IDACORP maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 3.4% to US$1.8b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are IDACORP Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$6.0b company like IDACORP. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they hold US$23m worth of its stock. This considerable investment should help drive long-term value in the business. While their ownership only accounts for 0.4%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders.

Is IDACORP Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One positive for IDACORP is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. To add an extra spark to the fire, significant insider ownership in the company is another highlight. These two factors are a huge highlight for the company which should be a strong contender your watchlists. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for IDACORP (1 is a bit concerning!) that you need to take into consideration.

Although IDACORP certainly looks good, it may appeal to more investors if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see companies with more skin in the game, then check out this handpicked selection of companies that not only boast of strong growth but have strong insider backing.
