Aurora Cannabis shares jumped Thursday morning after the cannabis company said it has discovered a genetic resistance that protects its plants from crop disease.
Shares rose 12% to 6.98 Canadian dollars ($4.87).
Aurora said that is has discovered a novel source of genetic resistance against powdery mildew, which it has called PM2, that provides strong protection against the pathogen in cannabis sativa.
Powdery mildew is a common fungal disease that appears as white powder on plants that can often affect the health of the plants and their yield.
This proprietary genetic marker technology is now in use in Aurora's breeding program. Aurora will produce these new resistant cultivars that will be explored for commercial launch this year.
The discovery of PM2 can support company's ability to improve the biosecurity of production facilities, reduce production costs, and improve product quality, it said.
