作为美国历史最悠久、最富有的高等学府，哈佛大学免除家庭收入在10万美元或以下的学生学费和食宿费，而收入不高于20万美元的家庭学生可免学费。
宾夕法尼亚大学和麻省理工学院近期也宣布了类似决定，在许多顶尖学校学费已经超过每年9万美元之际，这些计划将让更多家庭能够上得起名校。
哈佛大学校长Alan Garber表示，“让更多人有机会进入哈佛学习可以拓宽我们所有学生的背景、经验和视野，促进他们的智识和个人成长”。
根据声明，新计划将于2025-26学年启动，将帮助美国约86%的家庭获得哈佛大学的经济援助资格。目前，年收入不超过85000美元的家庭可以享受免学费政策。
特朗普政府正在威胁要切断对哈佛等顶尖名校的联邦资助，理由是这些高校未能解决反犹太主义问题，且支持多样性、公平性和包容性（DEI）。
哈佛大学的本科生的纯学费约为每年57000美元，超过一半的学生获得经济援助。
在数以百万计的美国人难以偿还学生贷款之际，越来越多的家庭质疑花大钱进名校是否值得。虽然精英大学继续收到大量优秀的学生的申请，但他们越来越重视学费的可负担问题。
