The past three years for MIND Technology (NASDAQ:MIND) investors has not been profitable

As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But the risk of stock picking is that you will likely buy under-performing companies. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term MIND Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MIND) shareholders, since the share price is down 42% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 26%. Unfortunately the share price momentum is still quite negative, with prices down 27% in thirty days.

Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

MIND Technology became profitable within the last five years. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So given the share price is down it's worth checking some other metrics too.

Revenue is actually up 21% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching MIND Technology more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. You can see what analysts are predicting for MIND Technology in this interactive graph of future profit estimates.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that MIND Technology has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 39% in the last twelve months. That certainly beats the loss of about 6% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand MIND Technology better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for MIND Technology (of which 2 are a bit concerning!) you should know about.
