1822 ET - Petco expects to improve its bottom line through its efforts to clamp down on underperforming stores and products, executives say on its 4Q earnings call. The company closed 25 stores last year, and expects to close another 20 to 30 this year. "We wouldn't be closing those stores if they were profitable," an executive says. Petco is looking to optimize its product assortment across categories, allocating more shelf space to its top-selling brands. The company points to particularly strong categories like its fresh and frozen pet food and its cat segment. Shares rise 10% in after-hours trading. (kelly.cloonan@wsj.com)
