Cinemas Show Resilience to Economic Slowdown -- Market Talk

0850 ET - Movie theaters are relatively protected from economic downturn, making Cinemark a strong stock, JPMorgan analysts say. Cinema attendance has historically correlated more with film quality rather than macroeconomic factors, the analysts say. They expect that dynamic to hold regardless of streaming alternatives, as the recently released Minecraft movie had a strong opening weekend despite a 10% drop in the market over those two days. The analysts are hopeful that the industry's focus on simplifying and extending exclusivity periods will help drive demand as well.(katherine.hamilton@wsj.com)
