Market Chatter: Google Turned Down Opportunity to Add Search Engine to OpenAI Chatbot

Alphabet's (GOOG) Google last year turned down an offer by OpenAI to include its search engine as part of the company's ChatGPT chatbot, Reuters reported, citing testimony made Tuesday during the federal government's antitrust trial against Google.

Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAi extended the offer in summer 2024 after experiencing problems with its search provider, Nick Turley, ChatGPT's head of product, reportedly told the court on Tuesday.

The US Department of Justice, which is seeking to force Google to spin off its Chrome browser from rest of the company to address antitrust issues, determined by the court last year, also presented an email between the companies detailing the OpenAI offer and Google's rejection in August 2024.

OpenAI, Google, and their respective attorneys, and Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
