1226 ET - Chipotle Mexican Grill reports its first quarterly decline in comparable restaurant sales since 2Q 2020, signaling that consumers are spending less and eating at home more frequently as fears of a recession loom. The restaurant chain said its same-store sales dropped 0.4% for the three months ended March 31, a stark contrast from the 7.4% increase that the fast-casual chain reported for the full year of 2024. CEO Scott Boatwright says the restaurant noticed that economic uncertainty started to affect consumers' spending habits in February, a trend that has continued into April. Shares rise 1% to $49.23.
