0918 ET - Boston Beer's warning about new tariff costs could overshadow an otherwise strong 1Q for shipments and profitability, Roth analysts Bill Kirk and Nick Anderson say in a research note. The Sam Adams brewer reported 1Q depletions down 1%, which is a small deceleration from flat trends in 3Q but still a strong result for a decelerating category, the analysts say. Shipments were up 5.3%, led by its vodka-based Sun Cruiser line which saw early success outside of well-tracked channels, resulting in Boston Beer's volumes outperforming scanner data, the analysts say. The higher shipments boosted gross profit, as did the company's cost-management programs and shifting of production in-house, they say. (dean.seal@wsj.com)
