FirstEnergy (FE) said today its subsidiary, Jersey Central Power & Light, will begin upgrading the electric grid in its northern and central New Jersey service territories, starting July 1.
The decision to invest more than $202.5 million over 3.5 years to expand smart grid technology in New Jersey comes after the company won approval from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities for its EnergizeNJ infrastructure investment program, according to a statement.
The program involves upgrading solid fuses along power lines, optimizing circuits for operational efficiency, introducing automated devices, and overhauling substations for enhanced data monitoring, the company said.
As part of the project, customers consuming 777 kilowatt-hours of electricity monthly and paying $136.37 will see their bills rise by $0.86 or 0.6% per month, according to the company.
The company added that it will seek federal funding to offset the impact on consumer bills.
