Alibaba Group has added a new rapid-delivery feature to its shopping platform, the e-commerce giant's latest attempt to grab a slice of China's on-demand delivery market from rivals like JD.com and Meituan.
A "instant commerce" appeared on Alibaba shopping platform Taobao's homepage on Wednesday across dozens of Chinese cities, according to screengrabs seen by Dow Jones Newswires.
Alibaba confirmed on Wednesday that it has added the feature, making it the latest Chinese company to start offering ultra-fast delivery services that typically take less than an hour.
Customers choosing the new service can order a wide range of products including food, apparel and footwear, and receive their items in less than an hour, the screengrabs showed.
Alibaba's new service is expected to be rolled out nationwide on May 6, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The move comes as Alibaba faces stiff competition in China's on-demand delivery market.
Beijing-based JD.com, a newcomer in food delivery, has been making aggressive moves to take on established leaders like Alibaba's Ele.me and Meituan, including a plan to hire 100,000 full-time riders to expand its new business.
Meituan commands approximately two-thirds of China's food delivery market, and Ele.me is its biggest competitor.
