Joby Aviation (JOBY), which is developing electric air taxis for commercial passenger service, said it successfully completed piloted flights transitioning from vertical takeoff to cruise flight and back again.

The success marks a "critical step" toward starting flight testing with the US Federal Aviation Administration, Joby said Tuesday in a statement.

"Joby remains on track to deliver an aircraft to Dubai in the middle of 2025 to complete flight testing ahead of first passenger flights in the region." according to the statement.

Transitioning from vertical to horizontal flight is a key design feature of the air taxi, enabling takeoffs like a helicopter and cruising speeds like a fixed-wing aircraft, the company said.
