UPDATE 1-DTE Energy's quarterly profit rises on strength of gas and energy trading

Adds comments from conference call in paragraphs 2, 3 and 7

May 1 (Reuters) - DTE Energy DTE.N reported increased first-quarter profit on Thursday, aided by strength in its gas and energy trading segments, and added it anticipates the tariff impact to be manageable.

The power industry is bracing for the potential fallout from tariffs as the trade war between the U.S. and Canada may raise costs, but DTE expects limited impact on its $30 billion capital expenditure plan.

DTE Energy, which has partnerships with automakers GM GM.N, Ford F.N and BMW BMWG.DE to increase renewable energy usage in Michigan, added it also has a margin exposure of 3% to 4% from auto tariffs.

The Detroit, Michigan-based company's gas segment reported a profit of $206 million in the first quarter, compared with $160 million during the corresponding period a year ago.

The energy trading segment's profit jumped to $67 million during the three months ended March 31, from $1 million last year, driven by a 13.4% rise in U.S. natural gas prices NGC1.

Its results were partially offset by weakness in the electric segment, where profit fell 28% due to high costs. However, the company continues to see strong demand from data centers.

"Data center conversations are continuing. There's been really no slowdown," a company executive said on a conference call.

The company's net income rose to $445 million, or $2.14 per share, for the quarter, from $313 million, or $1.51 per share, a year earlier.
