Peabody Energy (BTU) reported Q1 earnings Tuesday of $0.27 per diluted share, down from $0.29 a year earlier.
A single analyst polled by FactSet expected $0.10.
Revenue for the quarter ended March 31 was $937 million, down from $983.6 million a year ago.
Three analysts surveyed by FactSet expected $950 million.
The company's board maintained the quarterly dividend at $0.075, payable on June 4 to shareholders of record on May 15.
The coal-producing company said it expects customer demand to rise during the year, following a "strong start" to US coal consumption.
Peabody shares were 2.8% higher in recent Tuesday premarket activity.
