Merck & Co. plans to invest $895 million to expand its animal-health operations in De Soto, Kan.

Merck on Thursday said the move includes an $860 million investment in its existing biologics manufacturing facility, along with a $35 million investment in its research-and-development laboratories.

The Rahway, N.J., drug maker said the 200,000-square-foot manufacturing facility project will expand filling and freeze dryer capacity for large molecule vaccines and biologic products for its Merck Animal Health unit, which accounted for roughly 10% of the company's first-quarter sales of more than $15.5 billion.

Merck said site preparation and facility design will start immediately, creating 2,500 construction jobs, with commercial manufacturing slated to begin in 2030, creating more than 200 full-time roles.
