Hundreds of staff employed by toll road operator Transurban across three major cities are set to lose their jobs after the company announced sweeping cuts in a bid to save millions of dollars.
The major tolling company which has about 4100 direct employees is set to axe 300 jobs across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane equaling to about 7 per cent of its workforce.
The majority of the job losses will come from the company's head office located in Melbourne, with 75 others expected to be dropped from Sydney.
Further cuts will be made from Transurban's Brisbane CBD office and posts located in North America.
The Daily Telegraph reported mostly white collar roles are at risk of termination while traffic control, safety, maintenance and construction jobs are expected to remain unaffected.
It is understood those who are on the company's chopping block will be notified of their fate on Thursday.
Transurban expects to save more than $50 million across the company after laying off hundreds of staff.
On Thursday, Chief Executive Michelle Jablko said she wanted the company to be more "agile and efficient" and those impacted by the latest decision will receive support.
“Transurban remains focused on safety, strengthening government partnerships, investing in customer value and laying the foundations for long-term growth,” she said.
“Our immediate priority will be to manage this process as quickly and as sensitively as possible and provide support to those impacted by this decision.
“Building on the work we have already commenced, there will be a continuation of investment in customer facing and operational technologies to improve the overall experiences of our customers and our operational effectiveness.
“This will be a core focus for us as we pursue our pipeline of growth opportunities.”
Transurban operates 22 roads in Australia and North America. The company further owns 11 of Sydney’s 13 toll roads.
