Geopolitical Tensions Between India, Pakistan Unlikely to Abate in Near Term -- Market Talk

0723 GMT - Geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated and are unlikely to abate in the near term, says Lavanya Venkateswaran of OCBC Global Markets Research & Strategy, in an email. "The situation warrants close monitoring, and sentiment will likely remain pressured in the near-term," the senior Asean economist says. Meanwhile, India's fundamentals are still skewed toward slowing growth momentum and cooling inflationary pressures, the economist says. "This justifies Reserve Bank of India's dovish stance, and we expect RBI to cut its policy rate by 25bp at its 6 June meeting," Venkateswaran says. OCBC also expects a further 50 bps worth of RBI rate cuts, bringing the policy rate to 5.25% by end-FY 2026. (ronnie.harui@wsj.com)
