消息面上，5月8日，比特币一度升破99000美元，截至发稿，比特币报98838.9美元/枚，日内涨2.36%。美国总统特朗普在其自创的社媒平台Truth Social上发帖称，明天（当地时间周四）上午10点（北京时间周四晚上10点）将在椭圆形办公室举行一场重大的新闻发布会，事关与一个备受尊敬的大国的重大贸易协议。特朗普补充称，这将是“众多协议中的第一个”，但没有提供更多细节，包括哪个国家。特朗普政府表示，美国正在与印度、英国、韩国和日本进行积极谈判。
