Shares of Starz Entertainment gained after the company was separated from Lions Gate Entertainment.

Starz stock rose 56%, to $12.48. Meanwhile, Lionsgate Studios shares were up 23%, to $8.43.

Lions Gate Entertainment, which bought Starz in 2016, said in December 2023 that it would separate its studios business and merge it with Screaming Eagle Acquisition, a special-purpose acquisition company. That transaction closed in May 2024.

As of Dec. 31, Starz, known for shows such as "Outlander" and "Power," had about 20 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada.

Lionsgate movies have included the "John Wick," "Hunger Games" and "Saw" franchises and shows including "Mad Men," "Orange is the New Black" and "Weeds."
