根据盖茨基金会绘制的图表，到2045年，比尔·盖茨将捐掉个人99%的财富。据盖茨基金会介绍，比尔·盖茨目前财富净值为1080亿美元。按照此数字计算，他需要每年至少捐出50亿美元财富。比尔·盖茨在声明中称，他读过最有启发的著作之一是安德鲁·卡内基在1889年发表的《财富的福音》，它认为富人有责任将自己的资源回馈给社会。“拥巨富而死者耻辱。”这是卡内基文章中最有名的一句话。
