5月15日，美国总统唐纳德·特朗普表示，他已经要求苹果首席执行官蒂姆·库克停止在印度建厂，此举打击了苹果实现生产多元化的计划。特朗普谈到他在卡塔尔与库克的会面时表示：“我昨天和蒂姆·库克有点小矛盾。他正在印度各地建厂。我不希望苹果在印度建厂。”特朗普表示，此次谈话的结果是，苹果将“提高在美国的产量”。
特朗普表示，印度是世界上关税壁垒最高的国家之一，在这个地球上人口最多的国家销售美国产品非常困难。不过，他表示，印度已提出取消对美国商品的关税，因为这个亚洲国家正在寻求就进口税达成协议。
特朗普的言论阻碍了苹果2026年底在印度组装所有销往美国的iPhone的计划。据悉，苹果的大部分iPhone在中国生产，在美国没有生产任何智能手机。
印度制造的大部分iPhone在富士康位于印度南部的工厂组装。塔塔集团的电子制造部门也是其重要的供应商。据报道，塔塔和富士康也在印度南部建设新工厂，并扩大产能。
在截至今年3月的12个月里，苹果在印度组装了价值220亿美元的iPhone，产量比上一年增长了近60%。
