美国总统特朗普日前访问中东期间，在社交媒体证实将接受卡塔尔王室赠送的一架估值约4亿美元的豪华飞机，并计划将其改装为临时总统专机“空军一号”使用。据英国广播公司（BBC）报道，现役两架“空军一号”自1990年服役至今，维护机身和发动机的成本逐年增长。特朗普曾私下抱怨乘坐老旧飞机让他感到尴尬，而美政府向波音公司新订购的两架波音747-8型原定2024年交付，但项目因多种因素拖延，首架最新时间表为最晚2027年交付，第二架最迟2028年交付。
据美国哥伦比亚广播公司（CBS）报道，长约70.1米的“空军一号”最快航速约为1014公里/小时。客机内部空间约377平方米，可容纳26名机组人员和76名乘客。“空军一号”最重要的空间是位于飞机前端的总统私人办公室。
飞机后段则配备高级参谋会议室、员工休息室、厨房等空间，记者乘坐的客舱在机尾，且新闻机构需要为行程付费。总统专机还需具备紧急作战指挥能力，如支持空中加油，现役机型还能抵御核爆炸的电磁脉冲及辐射。
不过，据专业人士分析，对卡塔尔赠机复杂的改装至少要持续到2030年，这意味着很难在特朗普任期内交付。美国华盛顿战略与国际问题研究中心顾问马克·坎西恩透露称，此类改装成本或达10亿美元，且需要放弃部分功能才能加快交付进度。
