Walmart, Albertsons, Kroger and Publix are among the companies that issued recalls this week related to a Bedner Growers cucumber recall that resulted from salmonella concerns.

The Centers and Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that 26 people from 15 states have gotten sick from the same strain of salmonella linked to whole cucumbers, including nine hospitalizations. The CDC advises businesses to not sell or serve whole cucumbers grown by Boynton Beach, Fla.,-based Bedner and distributed by Fresh Start Produce between April 29 to May 19.

As part of an April follow-up inspection in response to salmonella cases in 2024, Food and Drug Administration investigators collected an environmental sample from Bedner that was positive for salmonella and matched recent clinical samples from ill people. The FDA said its traceback investigation identified Bedner as the common grower of cucumbers in the current outbreak.

In addition to cucumbers, products such as salsa and salads have been recalled. On Thursday, Sysco's Coastal Cos. said it recalled 17 items that used Bedner cucumbers.

The FDA said it is aware that Bedner cucumbers are available at both restaurant and retail locations and is working to determine where potentially contaminated products were distributed.
