Southeast Asian leaders have agreed that any bilateral trade deals with the US should not harm fellow ASEAN economies, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's address after a regional summit in Kuala Lumpur.
Ibrahim, ASEAN's current chair, emphasized that regional solidarity must be preserved amid ongoing negotiations over US tariffs that could impact several Southeast Asian countries. The summit also saw the release of a five-year plan aimed at deepening regional economic integration, the report said.
Leaders reiterated their call for an expanded ceasefire in Myanmar to help end violence and encourage dialogue. China's Premier Li Qiang joined the summit and urged countries to support open trade and work together. Ibrahim said quiet efforts are being made to talk with both Myanmar's military and rebel groups, the news agency added.
