United Steelworkers Union Calls on Ottawa to Defend Against Trump's Steel Threats -- Market Talk

0818 ET - The United Steelworkers union warns President Trump's threat to slap 50% tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum would completely shut Canada out of the U.S. market. "This isn't trade policy, it's a direct attack on Canadian industries and workers. Thousands of Canadian jobs are on the line and communities that rely on steel and aluminum are being put at risk," says the union's national director for Canada, Marty Warren. The USW is urging Ottawa to apply targeted countermeasures to protect the Canadian market from offshore steel. It says the government must also eliminate exemptions that allow U.S. steel and aluminum to enter Canada tariff-free. The union also says the government must move quickly to strengthen domestic demand through industrial investment and domestic procurement reform. (robb.stewart@wsj.com; @RobbMStewart)
