1104 ET - The consumer environment remains choppy, Genesco CEO Mimi Vaughn says on a call with analysts. "Consumers show a willingness to shop when there's a reason, like we saw over Valentine's Day and Easter, and retreat when there's not," she says. When consumers are willing to shop, they are more selective, Vaughn adds. In order to attract shoppers, the retailer behind brands including Journeys and Johnston & Murphy says it relied on innovation. "We know that in this environment it is compelling footwear and freshness that motivate the consumer to purchase, and we've taken major actions to respond to these consumer needs," Vaughn says. Shares rise 1.1% after Genesco raises its FY outlook. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
