Lee Enterprises experienced a data security incident affecting some of its customers' personal information.
The company said Thursday the information was accessed without authorization on Feb. 1 and may include individuals' names with a combination of their social security number, driver's license, financial account number, medical information, or health insurance policy number.
An investigation was initiated with cybersecurity specialists after the company discovered suspicious activity. It learned on May 28 that some of its customers' personal information was included in the affected dataset, it said.
The company has taken measures to boost security and minimize the risk of a similar incident in the future, it said. It has also notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation and said it will cooperate with any resulting investigation.
Shares fell 5.8% to $6.34 in after-hours trading.
