据美国《华盛顿邮报》网站6月7日报道，由于特朗普总统威胁要取消给马斯克的太空探索技术公司的合同，以及马斯克作出挑衅性回应，美国国家航空航天局（NASA）和五角大楼官员过去一周迅速采取行动，敦促太空探索技术公司的竞争对手加快步伐开发替代火箭和航天器。

让政府官员尤其震惊的是，马斯克一度以自己的威胁回应特朗普，他曾表示太空探索技术公司将停飞它的“龙”飞船。此举将使NASA无法把宇航员运送到国际空间站。

马斯克后来收回了他的威胁。但这引起了NASA和五角大楼官员的警觉，因为前者将宇航员的生命托付给了太空探索技术公司，而后者则严重依赖太空探索技术公司发射其最敏感的卫星。

报道称，此类担忧凸显了美国政府严重依赖太空探索技术公司执行关键任务(包括机密任务)的风险。太空探索技术公司获得了数十亿美元的政府合同，它向国际空间站运送人员和货物，为五角大楼发射卫星，并开发情报机构使用的卫星。更令人担忧的是它的竞争对手追赶迟缓，这使得太空探索技术公司的主导地位在很大程度上不受挑战，而且也导致美国政府没有多少选项。
