Market Chatter: Salesforce Restricts Third-Party Software Firms' Access to Slack Data

Salesforce (CRM) has restricted third-party software firms from storing or indexing customer Slack data long-term, The Information reported late Tuesday, citing a "public disclosure" from the company.

"As AI raises critical considerations around how customer data is handled, we're committed to delivering AI and data services in a way that's thoughtful and transparent," a Salesforce spokesperson said in an emailed response to MT Newswires.

The policy change limits how external apps can use Slack messages, even with customer consent. These apps may now only access and temporarily use Slack data, but must delete it afterward, according to The Information.

The move could disrupt startups like Glean that rely on persistent access to Slack data to support enterprise search tools, The Information said. Glean reportedly informed customers that the new policy prevents them from incorporating Slack content into its knowledge systems, potentially reducing the effectiveness of its platform. Glean can now only retrieve Slack data in real time, query by query, according to the report.

The Salesforce spokesperson directed MT Newswires to a May blog post where the company said that the new "real-time search approach streamlines workflows and reinforces our commitment to data integrity with integrations into Slack that prioritize customer data protection."

Glean did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
