June 13 - (The Insurer) - Former Lloyd’s market oversight director Peter Montanaro has re-emerged at expansive Lloyd’s syndicate and MGA Volante Global, where he will assume a broad-based advisory role as non-executive director.
Montanaro announced he was to retire from Lloyd’s late last year following three decades at the Corporation, during which he helped shape its current oversight structure.
The Lloyd’s veteran was projected to remain at Lime Street in an advisory capacity until the end of May 2025 and is now expected to take up the role within Acrisure-owned Volante, where he will use his London market experience to bolster the group’s growth ambitions.
Montanaro will join the Volante Global group board and will chair Volante International Limited, the FCA-regulated UK entity which acts as a managing agent to both third-party capital providers and Volante’s own Syndicate 1699.
At Volante, Montanaro will also work closely with chair and interim CEO Martin Reith, the former Helios CEO and Ascot founder who took over the reins from founder Talbir Bains in February.
Reith was appointed executive chairman late last year, the same time the industry entrepreneur was named as adviser to parent Acrisure’s advisory unit Acrisure Re Corporate Advisory and Solutions.
In a statement to The Insurer, Reith said: “Volante is going through an exciting period of evolution as we further harness our core strengths. Volante’s underwriting expertise and global reach are the strong foundations to further expand our UK offering and deepen our core international footholds.
“We are thrilled to have someone with Peter’s expertise, knowledge and relationships, not just within Lloyd’s but the London market as a whole, to continue this development.”
This publication has previously reported on the build-out of Volante’s executive leadership team, including the appointment of SiriusPoint’s Samantha Giles as head of planning and performance, and QBE Re’s Tom Chivers as chief underwriting officer for long-tail D&F in October 2024.
In May last year Arvin Rajendram was promoted to head of underwriting governance and controls, while Scor’s former head of UK hub reserving Rachael Walker joined the same month to take on the role of head of reserving.
Former Lloyd’s underwriting manager Kirstie Keate was appointed as short-tail CUO, with Stuart Dale and David Martin hired to lead Syndicate 1699’s global casualty and marine treaty books, respectively.
Montanaro is one of a number of senior Corporation executives to leave One Lime Street this year. Others include Lloyd's CEO John Neal, who stepped down on May 31 to join broker Aon; chief financial officer Burkhard Keese, who exited at the end of March; chairman Bruce Carnegie-Brown; and corporate affairs director Rebekah Clement.
