Market Chatter: IHI, GE Vernova Build Test Site For Ammonia Gas Turbine Combustor

IHI (TYO:7013) and GE Vernova completed a testing facility at IHI's Aioi plant in Hyogo prefecture to develop a combustor for large-scale ammonia-fueled gas turbines, Nikkei reported Tuesday.

Testing will begin this summer, according to the report.

The project aims to adapt existing large power company turbines to burn ammonia by replacing the combustor, addressing decarbonization goals.

While ammonia combustion emits no carbon dioxide, it produces nitrogen oxides; the tests will explore ways to minimize these emissions, the report said.

IHI, which does not produce large turbines, is leveraging GE Vernova's expertise. The two companies partnered in 2022 to develop ammonia-fueled power generation technology, competing with Siemens Energy and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (TYO:7011), according to the report.
