SMA Solar Technology AG has secured a contract for a significant four-hour battery storage project in Chile's Atacama Desert, set to enhance the existing 220 MW Diego de Almagro Sur solar power plant operated by Colbún S.A. The project will incorporate a 228 MW battery storage system with a capacity of 918 MWh, utilizing 67 SMA storage systems and advanced battery inverters, alongside batteries from eStorage, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. This initiative aims to store solar energy for grid stability and support energy security in Chile through features like instantaneous reserve and black start capabilities. The construction began in June, with commercial operations expected by December 2026.
