ASIC to police cash-swollen union redundancy funds

After decades of exemptions, the corporate watchdog is planning on regulating unions’ billion-dollar redundancy funds to ensure transparency and governance laws apply to the rapidly expanding sector.

The Australian Securities and Investment Commission announced on Tuesday that it was reassessing whether the Corporations Act should apply to the industry funds because the amount of money under their management had quadrupled, and they had expanded beyond redundancy entitlements.
